Iyengar Yoga
What is Iyengar Yoga ?
B.K.S Iyengar was a direct disciple of Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, who himself was a pupil from Ramamohana Brahmachary
Iyengar yoga introduces the alignment aspect of each posture, the use of props and the importance of paying close attention to anatomical details. Iyengar Yoga is the practice of precision. Asanas are held for long periods and often modified with props. This method is designed to systematically cultivate stability, flexibility, strength and awareness, and can be therapeutic for specific conditions.
This type of yoga is particularly well-suited for people with back problems and for people who suffer from stress (two conditions that often go together).
Timings are the ways that the postures can be held for different lengths of time to enable a more profound exploration of the physical and mental challenges in the pose.Technicalities are the precise and often subtle technical points given to explore the Asana fully. sequencing is the way Mr Iyengar put together postures to achieve a particular physical, physiological or mental effect. Sequencing can apply to postures, or even to points in postures, and can totally transform a practice.
Through yoga practice our understanding moves from the visible and knowable to the more subtle. It is a continuous and lifelong process.Together, these three features externally define the practice and development of Iyengar Yoga, though representing only some of the many aspects of yoga that Mr Iyengar highlighted and examined over his 65 years of practice.
